A 26-year-old man has been imprisoned after being convicted of causing the death of a pensioner through careless driving on a West Yorkshire road.
Reece Manley received a 14-month prison sentence at Leeds Crown Court after pleading guilty to the offence.
The collision occurred on the westbound A6110 ring road in Wortley in March 2022, resulting in the death of 75-year-old Alan Lloyd.
Manley, from Welford Road in Filey, was operating an uninsured and unregistered Kawasaki EX motorcycle at the time of the incident.
Mr Lloyd had been attempting to cross the carriageway when he was struck.
The victim’s family described the profound impact of their loss in a statement presented to the court.
They explained that their father had not been prepared to depart and that the family had not been ready to lose him in such circumstances.
The statement indicated they were unable to embrace him, express their affection, or bid farewell.
The family added that their father had been denied the opportunity to spend quality time watching his grandchildren develop, referring to the children of his son Ben and his wife Nicola, named Jacob and Isabelle.
Describing him as a devoted and exceptional grandfather who played a significant role in family gatherings, the family stated their unity and emphasized that he would be remembered indefinitely.
The statement concluded that the grief had fundamentally altered their lives, with the emotional toll proving substantial for all members.
Detective Sergeant Nina Roper from the Major Collision Enquiry Team confirmed that Mr Lloyd’s passing had caused devastating heartbreak to his relatives, as demonstrated by their victim impact statement.
She stated that their sympathies remained with the family.
Roper observed that Manley’s conduct had deprived the victim of further retirement years following decades of labour, and had deprived his family of additional cherished moments with a beloved father and grandfather.
She noted that Manley’s unsafe riding that evening had resulted in Mr Lloyd and his family bearing the most severe consequences of his irresponsible behaviour.
