7 Bradford businesses named and shamed for failing to pay minimum wage to 90 staff

Published on

A total of seven enterprises operating in the Bradford area have been publicly identified by the Government for underpaying staff below the statutory wage threshold.

Collectively, the businesses were found to owe in excess of £10,000 to approximately 90 members of their workforce, with individual shortfalls varying between just under £750 and around £2,500.

The reasons cited for these wage violations included deductions related to workplace dress codes, arrangements concerning employee housing, and computational mistakes in salary processing systems.

The latest disclosure forms part of a nationwide initiative by the Department for Business and Trade to expose employers who fail to meet their legal obligations regarding worker remuneration.

This campaign uncovered almost 660 companies across the country that had underpaid their staff.

Official figures indicate that approximately £4 million has subsequently been returned to more than 27,000 employees, while financial penalties totalling £7 million have been imposed on the offending businesses.

Among the entities featured were seven organisations based in the Bradford district.

The amounts involved ranged from £747.86 to £2,500.80.

City Glass Works Limited, located in the BD4 area, failed to compensate one employee by £2,500.80.

IBI Healthcare Ltd, which operates under the trading name Lister Pharmacy in BD8, underpaid a single worker by £1,971.59.

Crown Foods (Bradford) Ltd, also situated in BD8, fell short by £1,495.82 across its workforce of 17 people.

Creative Child Ltd, trading as Bamboo Kids in BD4, owed £1,377.26 to 18 staff members.

Megaplay (Bradford) Ltd, based in BD8, failed to pay £1,218.66 to 14 employees.

Fashion Wize Ltd, operating under the name Lister Schoolwear in BD9, underpaid 28 workers by a total of £1,003.55.

PB2 Ltd, located in BD7, owed £747.86 to 11 members of staff.

Representatives for Lister Pharmacy chose not to provide any response when approached for comment.

PB2 Ltd and Fashion Wize Ltd had not issued any statement at the time of publication.

Two of the Bradford companies attributed their underpayment issues to the manner in which clothing requirements were addressed within minimum wage legislation.

An official for Creative Child Ltd explained that the problem stemmed from a previous directive requiring personnel to wear black trousers.

The company acknowledged that it had not understood that stipulating workwear colour could influence wage calculations, stating that they ought to have ensured staff members purchasing black trousers were not being pushed below the legal minimum as a result.

The representative confirmed that all impacted employees received full repayment, supplementary compensation was provided, and the uniform policy was subsequently updated.

Megaplay (Bradford) Ltd offered comparable reasoning, indicating that the shortfall identified by HM Revenue and Customs originated from how uniform expectations were factored into National Minimum Wage computations.

The organisation characterised this as an unintentional misinterpretation of the regulations and confirmed that complete reimbursement was issued to all affected staff members immediately upon becoming aware of the issue.

City Glass Works Ltd clarified that its situation involved a member of staff who rented accommodation owned by the business.

According to the company, the individual received the correct hourly rate, though the application of National Minimum Wage accommodation offset regulations resulted in a calculated discrepancy.

The enterprise emphasised that this did not represent a deliberate attempt to underpay and arose from confusion about how the separate rental arrangement interacted with minimum wage requirements.

The affected worker received full repayment and additional compliance monitoring procedures have since been established.

Crown Foods (Bradford) Ltd stated that the underpayment stemmed from a computational error rather than any intentional decision to withhold wages.

The company indicated that the outstanding amount was remitted promptly following notification by HMRC.

A spokesperson for the organisation stated that immediate action was taken upon being informed of the issue, describing it as an inadvertent miscalculation rather than deliberate conduct.

The business added that systems were reviewed and modifications implemented to prevent recurrence.

During the announcement of the naming scheme, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds declared that underpaying staff would not be tolerated as a means of cutting costs.

Future of Work Minister Kate Dearden stated that withholding lawful wages constitutes a violation and that the authorities would not permit workers to bear the consequences of their employers’ failure to comply with regulations.

This naming initiative represents the first such exercise since the establishment of the Fair Work Agency, which has been tasked with supervising the enforcement of employee rights.

Official guidance advises all employers to examine their payment systems thoroughly and guarantee that workers receive every amount to which they are legally entitled.
