A former University of Bradford student has secured permanent employment at an international banking organisation after demonstrating strong performance during a placement with the company.
Aliya Iqbal, aged 23, completed a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Software Engineering with first-class honours in July 2026.
The graduate has now taken up a full-time position with HSBC Group, working within the corporate and investment banking technology division.
During her internship, Ms Iqbal gained experience in financial crime prevention, creating database tools designed to assist with fraud detection.
This placement led directly to her current graduate role, which spans locations between Canary Wharf and Sheffield.
The position centres on global payment solutions, providing support for financial technology infrastructure and banking systems that facilitate international business transactions.
Ms Iqbal’s academic path initially led towards medicine before she altered her career direction during her A-level studies and the pandemic period.
She transitioned from clinical sciences to software engineering, citing childhood experiences assembling computers alongside her father as an early indication of her technical interests.
Despite entering the programme without a background in computer science, Ms Iqbal embraced the academic challenge.
Lecturers at Bradford provided support to help her develop the necessary competencies, and she credits the institution with building both her technical abilities and professional confidence.
The University of Bradford currently has availability on computing and engineering courses through the clearing process.
Available programmes include chemical, civil, mechanical, software, and biomedical engineering.
The BEng Software Engineering qualification holds accreditation from the British Computer Society, providing eligibility for full Chartered IT Professional status and partial Chartered Engineer status.
The clearing period remains open until October 9.
Prospective students can contact the university directly using the designated clearing telephone line.
An online Clearing Hub resource offers information regarding available courses, virtual campus tours, application guidance, and additional student support services.
