A break-in occurred at a property on Harry Lane in Oxenhope, a district of Bradford, with an electrically powered bicycle reported as stolen.
Investigators believe the offender gained entry to the residence by prising open a cellar entrance using a gardening implement.
A cable lock securing the electric bike was subsequently severed during the theft.
The incident is understood to have taken place between Wednesday evening at 8pm and Thursday morning at 8am.
West Yorkshire Police are requesting that members of the public provide any information that could assist the investigation.
Residents in the area have been encouraged to review any CCTV recordings they may have that captured the suspect or the break-in itself.
Those with relevant footage or additional details should contact the police non-emergency number, quoting reference 13260501421.
Officers have also advised householders to ensure garden equipment is stored securely and not left unattended in outdoor spaces where it could potentially be exploited by criminals seeking to force entry into properties.
