A historic property in Settle with connections to English composer Sir Edward Elgar has attracted significant public interest following a summer-long consultation.

Dr Buck’s House, a listed building formerly operating as a NatWest bank branch, has become the subject of detailed community engagement led by its current owners, the North Craven Building Preservation Trust.

The trust initially arranged three open days and sought input from approximately 300 local residents regarding the future of the town centre building, which features a plaque commemorating Sir Edward Elgar’s regular stays as a guest of Dr Buck.

However, public enthusiasm exceeded expectations, resulting in nine open days and more than 300 visitors travelling from across the United Kingdom to view the property.

Volunteers will maintain regular opening hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the October half-term break to accommodate continued interest.

The survey, restricted to North Craven residents, drew participation from over 400 individuals.

Approximately two-thirds indicated concern about the building’s future, while three-quarters supported redevelopment plans citing anticipated positive effects on the local area.

Proposed concepts presented by the trust received favourable responses.

Seventy-two percent of participants endorsed converting the upper levels into long-term rental accommodation, and 74 percent supported establishing a museum gallery on the ground floor.

A fundraising tea event held at Langcliffe and organised by Victoria Murray, manager of The Folly Coffee House, generated more than £1,200 in August.

Heather Lane, Chair of Trustees for the North Craven Building Preservation Trust, expressed satisfaction with the community’s reception, noting that contributions and feedback strengthen the case for investment in the property’s future.

Caitlin Greenwood, Heritage Development Officer, conveyed appreciation to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and lottery participants for enabling the consultation process, emphasising the importance of such funding in facilitating community engagement.

Bluegrass Research, an independent market research firm, conducted the survey, which received financial support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The trust acquired Dr Buck’s House in August 2023.

North Yorkshire Council granted planning approval for development proposals earlier this year.

The property will participate in Heritage Open Days on Friday, September 18, with free entry.

Visitor numbers are restricted, and advance booking through The Folly’s website is required.
