Café and patisserie planned for vacant Bradford city centre building

A disused property on the periphery of Bradford’s central business district could be transformed into a café and bakery establishment, marking another addition to a series of ventures planned for this historically overlooked part of the city.

A planning proposal seeking permission to convert 146 Thornton Road, situated at the intersection with Lower Grattan Road, was filed with Bradford Council during the current week.

The submission, lodged by Hassan Khalil, suggests the enterprise would make a beneficial contribution to the local economy.

The development would occupy both levels of the prominent structure, with pedestrian access established along Thornton Road.

The property falls within the Goitside Conservation Area, an area that once constituted one of the most important commercial districts in the city, housing numerous textile mills and trading enterprises.

Over the past several decades, the locality has experienced economic deterioration and has recently become characterised by abandoned structures and automotive-related enterprises.

The planning documentation states that the proposed café operation is deemed appropriate given the commercial character of the building and its vicinity.

The scale and nature of the enterprise are not expected to generate problematic effects for nearby residents.

The scheme would restore the building to productive commercial use and introduce a fresh café and patisserie offering to the neighbourhood.

Investment in the premises, job creation, and increased activity at the location would constitute a positive contribution to the local economy.

Repurposing the existing structure represents an efficient approach to built development.

Fifteen parking bays situated to the rear of the property would serve the establishment.

Trading hours are proposed from 10am until 7pm Monday through Friday, extending until 11pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

An outcome on the application is anticipated towards the end of next month.

Should permission be granted, the café would join a growing number of enterprises launching in the vicinity.

Thornton Road has seen significant recent activity.

An energy facility on this thoroughfare is scheduled to commence operations shortly, while a Starbucks drive-through outlet adjacent to that location opened during the earlier part of this year.

Consent has been granted for an additional drive-through restaurant beside the Starbucks premises.

An escape room complex has commenced trading on an adjacent Thornton Road site.

Humbeys, a restaurant seating eighty customers and offering burgers, chips, and milkshakes, is slated to open imminently mere metres from the proposed café location.

A separate proposal for a thirty-two bedroom hotel incorporating four ground-level retail units and a rooftop café offering sweeping vistas across Bradford continues its progress through the planning process.
