A teenager from Bradford has had his poetic work recognised at a regional event celebrating individuals of all abilities.
Blessing Mandikate, aged 14, received diagnoses of autism and ADHD.
The gathering took place at East Bierley Cricket Club on the preceding Monday.
Its purpose was to honour accomplishments achieved by people across the full spectrum of abilities.
Rudo Chengeta, Blessing’s mother, described the accomplishment as evidence of personal development and persistence.
She stated that the piece explores themes of selfhood, the individuals who influence one’s existence and the value of life itself.
She noted that these subjects reflect Blessing’s own evolution in expressing himself.
Among the factors contributing to his communicative abilities, his participation in the Bradford Central Seventh-day Adventist Church has played a notable role.
Ms Chengeta indicated that prior to this involvement, Blessing experienced difficulties with verbal expression.
She stated that scripture-based learning elevated his poetry to a prominent position within his life.
Through participation in the church’s Adventurer Bible Experience and Pathfinder Bible Experience initiatives, Blessing devoted considerable time to examining biblical texts and committing passages to memory.
His mother stated that this approach to scriptural study contributed to his verbal development and provided him with assurance in articulating his ideas.
Blessing is currently enrolled as a pupil at St Bedes & St Joseph’s school and is exploring creative outlets including visual art and verse composition.
Ms Chengeta expressed the view that his accomplishments demonstrate a diagnosis need not restrict a young person’s potential.
She stated that his trajectory indicates that every individual possesses both a perspective to share and unique talents to offer.
The Bradford PHAB Festival welcomed Dr Manoj Joshi MBE DL, Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, alongside Kim Leadbeater, the Labour representative for Spen Valley in Parliament.
Blessing’s success also highlights the contributions of organisations including Bradford PHAB and Seventh-day Adventist Possibility Ministries, both of which establish welcoming settings and assist individuals with disabilities in their development.
Regarding his aspirations, Ms Chengeta noted that Blessing harbours multiple goals, including ambitions to pursue swimming and football at a professional level alongside a career in visual art.
She added that his creative instincts are evident in his enjoyment of expressing himself through drawing and poetic compositions, while his enthusiasm extends equally to aquatic and sporting activities.
