Seven girls model handmade creations at Bradford’s first children’s fashion show

A children’s fashion showcase made its debut at a sewing workshop in Manningham, Bradford, earlier this year.

Seven young girls presented garments they had created themselves during the Summer Sew Club programme held over the summer holidays.

Neelam Patel, aged 30, who leads the NPD Academy in Bradford, organised and hosted the event.

She explained that several participants had transformed existing clothing into new pieces, a process involving the careful selection of materials suitable for repurposing and the skilled disassembly of original garments.

Patel noted that creating clothing independently represents a considerably more deliberate approach to fashion compared to purchasing new items.

Originally from Nuneaton, Patel relocated to Bradford five years ago to join her husband.

She established her sewing academy with the aim of nurturing future designers in a city historically renowned as the Wool Capital of the World, a distinction stemming from its flourishing wool and worsted textile industry, particularly during the 1800s.

Patel’s own introduction to sewing did not occur during childhood.

Following studies at college and university level, the craft became a natural pursuit that she determined to share with others in Bradford and further afield.

At 16, despite her mother having no background in tailoring, she was encouraged to begin learning the skill.

Patel indicated she had no formal instruction available to her, yet this obstacle did not prevent her from continuing.

She described trying the craft once and immediately recognising it as her intended path.

While Patel studied Western tailoring techniques at college, she expressed interest in learning Asian tailoring methods but found limited resources available.

She observed that others must share similar aspirations, which led her to gradually develop a curriculum addressing this gap.

Patel has since authored educational materials enabling both adults and children to acquire sewing skills with the aim of preserving traditional techniques.

She noted that Asian tailoring encompasses distinct silhouette styles, construction methods, and fabric choices, with heavier materials demanding specialised approaches.

Regarding her own journey, Patel began her enterprise from a modest bedroom containing only basic furnishings and equipment.

She expressed confidence that individuals without a sewing background can successfully learn the craft, describing the prospect as less daunting than it might initially appear.

Those interested in exploring sewing were encouraged to consider attending one of her sessions.
