Bradford businessmen develop app to reduce A&E waiting times

Two entrepreneurs have launched a mobile application designed to tackle extended waits at Bradford Royal Infirmary’s emergency department.

Aqiq Akram, a Calverley resident employed by Kaiz Group Ltd, built the platform after experiencing a nearly twenty-four-hour delay for his own medical care.

The concept emerged from his direct experience of the problem he now seeks to solve.

The application targets systemic inefficiencies in emergency department queuing, particularly for patients whose conditions are not deemed urgent and consequently face the longest postponements.

A recent evaluation by the Care Quality Commission lowered its assessment of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s urgent and emergency services from good to requires improvement, highlighting concerns about extended waiting periods.

Chris Storton, the regulator’s deputy director for northern operations, noted that individuals raised issues about postponements and prolonged waits for fundamental needs including pain management and assistance with personal care.

Some patients were documented as remaining in the emergency department beyond twenty-four hours.

Akram contends that the technology could substantially reduce waiting durations through improved queue administration.

The platform allows patients to register their attendance, places others onto a waiting list, and maintains an orderly queue.

A common problem involves patients departing without notification, leaving staff to discover their absence during calls, which compounds delays.

The system provides a mechanism for tracking attendance in real time.

The application, created by his son Kamran Akram, delivers automatic text message notifications to patients and requests confirmation of their continued need to be seen.

This feature mitigates the stress associated with uncertain waiting periods, offering more predictable timeframes for consultation.

Akram proposed complimentary installation with a subsequent monthly subscription but saw his offer declined.

While the trust withheld comment, public sector procurement regulations under the Procurement Act 2023 impose strict requirements on contract allocations.

The developers maintain the solution is deployment-ready following a trial proposal.

According to their claims, one hundred percent of emergency department staff consulted indicated the system would prove practical.

The regulator’s review occurred in September 2025.

The trust has since disclosed implementation of a corrective strategy and investment in supplementary emergency staffing.

The department’s original capacity stipulated two hundred patient consultations daily yet currently accommodates approaching six hundred visits.

Trust representatives affirmed that local emergency department metrics continue outperforming nationwide benchmarks while acknowledging that patient satisfaction has not consistently reached desired standards.
