Six Leeds apprentices build new training centre for young people in Wortley

A new vocational training facility has been completed in the Wortley area, with plans to admit its first cohort of students when the autumn term commences.

The post-16 centre was specifically developed to address the needs of teenagers who have left mainstream education and are at risk of becoming classified as Not in Education, Employment or Training.

Six young people completing their apprenticeship programmes with Leeds-based building services company G&H were responsible for the design and installation of the mechanical, electrical, and public health systems throughout the development.

The company, which was established in 1998 and provides engineering solutions nationwide, selected the trainees to carry out the work on behalf of vocational training provider Building Futures Together.

Curriculum offerings at the centre will include practical instruction in electrical and plumbing disciplines, alongside foundational education in construction site safety and preparation.

Trainees will engage in hands-on exercises involving the installation of lighting circuits and power outlets, the removal and replacement of heating radiators, and the manipulation, assembly and connection of copper pipework.

Successful completion of programmes will enable learners to obtain City and Guilds accreditation at Level 1, either through an award or diploma qualification in construction skills.

The opportunity afforded to the apprentices proved significant in terms of their professional development.

One first-year projects apprentice from G&H noted that the initial period of an apprenticeship typically involves considerable observation and incremental responsibility, yet this project demanded immediate practical engagement.

The individual undertook activities including the preparation of risk assessments and method statements, examination of health and safety obligations, establishment of site safety signage, procurement of required materials, and general coordination of tasks.

The experience was described as invaluable, with the apprentice acknowledging the value of mentorship that permitted autonomy while providing necessary guidance.

Mistakes were acknowledged as inevitable, but the surrounding support enabled learning and reflection on alternative approaches for future situations.

The apprentice cohort comprised individuals specialising in different disciplines, including a design apprentice, two electrical apprentices and two mechanical apprentices.

Building Futures Together will utilise the completed facility to deliver training programmes aimed at preventing young people in the 16 to 19 age bracket from entering the NEET classification.

According to the company’s development manager, practical site experience forms a core component of apprenticeship programmes, with trainees working alongside qualified and experienced mentors.

While oversight was maintained, the apprentices assumed genuine ownership of the project and operated as a collaborative team to deliver the completed facility.

Their accumulated knowledge and skills were effectively deployed to create a space that will serve the next generation of workers entering the construction sector.

The manager expressed considerable pride in the team’s achievements.
