92 per cent of UK adults care about legacy they leave behind, survey finds

Research has revealed that the majority of Britons prioritize personal relationships over professional accomplishments when considering their lasting impact.

A study conducted by Remember A Charity found that 92 per cent of adults in the United Kingdom expressed concern about the legacy they would leave behind.

Approximately 65 per cent identified being a supportive friend, partner, or family member as the most significant element of their legacy, while only 10 per cent ranked career achievement as their primary focus.

Remember A Charity’s director Lucinda Frostick stated during Remember A Charity Week that the research indicated people rarely associate legacy with fame or financial prosperity.

Instead, individuals described providing support to loved ones, assisting those experiencing hardship, and cherishing ordinary shared experiences as the defining elements of who they are.

Additional priorities highlighted in the research included offering help during difficult periods and transmitting values and wisdom to future generations, both of which ranked above career advancement.

More than 200 charitable organisations have united for Remember A Charity Week, which runs from September 7 to 13, to prompt reflection on the theme of personal legacy.

The initiative also seeks to demonstrate how charitable contributions can constitute a meaningful and enduring part of one’s legacy.

The research indicated that 65 per cent of participants considered backing causes close to their hearts as important, with 22 per cent having already incorporated or intending to include a charitable bequest in their will.

At present, one in six estates processed through probate contains a charitable donation, generating roughly £4.5 billion annually for UK charities.

Actress Sherrie Hewson, who is lending her support to the campaign, expressed that legacy represents the influence individuals have on others rather than personal possessions, and involves preserving the memory of cherished people while championing meaningful causes.
