AA warns drivers as petrol rises 8p to 170.3p a litre since September

UK petrol prices have climbed by more than eight pence per litre since the beginning of September, according to newly released figures.

The mean petrol price stood at 170.3 pence per litre recently, up from 166.2 pence a week prior and 161.8 pence at the commencement of the month.

Diesel closed the trading period at 192.7 pence per litre, representing a five pence increase compared with the preceding week when the average reached 187.7 pence.

The current diesel price exceeds the start-of-month figure of 183.6 pence by 9.1 pence.

The current diesel cost falls 6.4 pence short of the record high of 199.1 pence per litre documented during the opening phase of the conflict in Ukraine.

Data was compiled from the Oil Market Journal, a trade-recognised publication that also provides fuel pricing intelligence to the AA motoring organisation.

Wholesale petrol expenses have displayed indicators of moderation, remaining in the 79 pence to 81 pence band throughout September.

Diesel wholesale costs continue to climb steeply, though they remain beneath the peak logged in June 2022.

Northern Ireland experienced the most pronounced pump price elevation in the past seven days.

Nonetheless, its mean road fuel costs remain no less than five pence per litre beneath those observed in England’s least expensive region.

Scotland maintains its position as the most costly UK territory for both petrol and diesel in terms of averages.

The nation recorded the most modest pump price increases the previous week.

Beyond Northern Ireland, and disregarding Costco outlets that necessitate a membership subscription, more economical fuel was obtainable in 11 urban centres across England, Scotland and Wales.

In those localities, petrol cost no less than 10 pence per litre beneath the UK mean.

These prices were logged via Fuel Finder between September 10 and September 15.

Regarding diesel, 39 towns and cities were retailing the fuel at 10 pence per litre or greater below the UK mean.

Those rates were similarly recorded via Fuel Finder between September 10 and September 15, outside Northern Ireland and Costco premises.

Luke Bosdet, the AA’s representative on fuel pricing at the pumps, observed that the disparity between competitive and standard forecourts posed a significant question for the sector.

He noted that numerous fuel outlets could offer refuelling for a Transit-style van at 80 pounds beneath the UK mean, while the majority charged considerably more and placed business clients under financial duress.

Bosdet added that the 39 outlets appearing on Fuel Finder since September 10 were unlikely to represent the complete set, as several others would have posted such competitive pricing prior to that date.

Bosdet stated that Fuel Finder at minimum offered motorists and commercial enterprises some prospect of identifying cheaper fuel stations and directing their custom away from overpriced alternatives.

He emphasised that greater awareness of consumer leverage was required among drivers.

Regarding the prevalence of forecourts pricing diesel 10 pence below average, Bosdet commented that the existence of competitive fuel retailers and willing consumers meant that the dominance of inflated postcode-based pump pricing could be dismantled.
