Bradford will host its annual Festivals of the Dead this autumn, a series of community events focused on remembrance, loss, and celebration through creative expression.
Thousands of residents are anticipated to participate in the programme.
The initiative brings together three local organisations: Cecil Green Arts, the University of Bradford, and Bradford Death Cafés, combining their expertise in arts, academia, and community discussion about mortality.
One highlight is the Cecil Green Arts Lantern Parade scheduled for Lister Park on Friday, October 30.
The event will explore the Celebration of Life theme, encouraging attendees to contemplate cherished relationships, neighbourhood bonds, and enduring memories through artistic interpretation.
Local volunteers from Bradford Culture Company will provide support throughout the proceedings.
The second major gathering occurs at Northcliffe Park on Saturday, November 14, offering a more contemplative atmosphere.
Participants can engage with memorial lantern displays, participate in creative workshops, and join a modest procession featuring live music and performances.
The evening programme concludes with a formal reading of names and a life-affirming celebration.
Pre-event workshops commence at Bradford City Library and Shipley Library, forming part of an extensive five-week schedule.
These sessions guide participants in crafting willow lanterns while discussing themes of mortality and commemoration within a welcoming environment.
Those interested in joining the workshop series can secure places through Eventbrite.
Professor Karina Croucher, an archaeology specialist at the University of Bradford, stated that mortality connects everyone yet remains challenging to discuss openly.
She noted that these gatherings enable people to connect through artistic expression, contemplation, and dialogue, offering a supportive environment for exploring how communities honour and process the passing of loved ones.
Participants are encouraged to use this space to reflect on those who have died while celebrating their lives and the lasting bonds that remain.
