Yorkshire haulage firms warn of £40k monthly fuel cost surge

Yorkshire’s road transport sector is facing mounting financial pressure as diesel costs continue to climb, with operators reporting monthly fuel expenditure increases of up to £40,000 and urging policymakers to intervene.

Companies across the region say they are reassessing fuel surcharge structures, absorbing higher operational expenses where possible, and transmitting some cost increases downstream to clients as wholesale diesel values approach historic peaks.

The RAC has indicated that diesel prices are trending towards record territory, prompting widespread concern across the logistics industry about additional upward pressure on already elevated fuel bills.

Representatives from Farsley Transport Ltd, a Leeds-headquartered business operating approximately 70 commercial vehicles, outlined the severity of the situation.

The company’s managing director, Neil Chappelow, described how escalating fuel prices are materially affecting day-to-day operations.

Monthly fuel expenditure has risen substantially in recent months, with the company receiving notifications of further increases of between five-and-a-half and seven pence per litre over the coming days.

Fuel costs for a standard route to the capital have risen by an estimated £160 to £170 compared with previous periods.

Chappelow acknowledged that while surcharges can be implemented, there exists a ceiling on how much additional expense clients can reasonably bear.

The additional costs ultimately pass through the supply chain to end purchasers of goods and services.

Bradford-based Nigel Rice Transport indicated that the ramifications of elevated diesel prices extend throughout the entire distribution network.

A company spokesperson explained that fuel surcharges undergo regular review and are communicated openly to customers, though transport cost escalation inevitably contributes to broader inflationary pressure.

Some businesses operate under fixed-rate pallet agreements that incorporate fuel expenses, leaving them vulnerable to rapid increases in wholesale fuel values and facing compressed margins.

KLG Europe, which maintains its own vehicle fleet, has also experienced considerable growth in distribution costs.

General manager Jamie Wood observed that fuel price escalation is a daily concern for the business.

Some operators are choosing to absorb a portion of additional expenses to preserve customer relationships, while others find themselves compelled to pass charges directly to clients.

Wood suggested that government assistance in the form of reduced fuel duty or a freight sector rebate mechanism merits serious consideration.

Beyond operational cost pressures, rising fuel values have heightened concerns about theft.

Filling a single articulated truck can now require between £1,200 and £1,400, prompting Farsley Transport to enhance security provisions and implement closer monitoring of vehicles and fuel consumption patterns.

Chappelow characterised the sector as an increasingly attractive target as diesel values climb.

Industry representatives have appealed directly to ministers for support.

Chappelow argued that reductions to fuel duty would deliver immediate respite for struggling operators.

Wood echoed these calls, noting that fuel taxation represents a significant burden on an industry critical to the functioning of the broader economy.

The AA has attributed the surge in pump prices to geopolitical instability involving Iran and the United States, which has pushed wholesale petrol and diesel values to their highest readings since 2022.

The organisation has also highlighted limited competition among fuel retailers, suggesting coordinated pricing behaviour maintains forecourt costs above competitive levels.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams indicated that diesel prices are on course to surpass all previous records, with the average price rising by almost 12 pence per litre this month alone, while petrol has increased by more than 10 pence per litre.

For transport operators throughout Yorkshire, the trajectory remains concerning.

Industry observers suggest that if diesel values persist in climbing, the economic consequences will extend well beyond the logistics sector and reverberate throughout the wider economy.
