Bradford city centre transformation adds 2.4km of cycle lanes and 25% footfall rise

A major urban renewal initiative in Bradford has received national recognition as a model for how investment in walking and cycling infrastructure can transform city centres.

The Bradford City Centre Transformation scheme has been included in a report published by Cycling UK that highlights successful active travel projects from across the United Kingdom.

The document is intended to demonstrate to local authorities the tangible benefits of continued support for schemes that prioritise pedestrians, cyclists and public transport over private vehicle use.

The experience of local resident Norah McWilliam appears in the publication, documenting her perspective on the changes that have been implemented.

According to her account, the environment has become considerably more pleasant, with newly designed landscaping and wildflower areas receiving particular praise.

She noted that the ability to traverse the city centre on foot or by bicycle without concerns about motorised traffic represented a significant advancement.

The initiative reached completion during 2025, having been developed through collaboration between Bradford Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

The majority of funding was channelled through the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund.

The project encompassed approximately 2.4 kilometres of dedicated cycling lanes, 1.6 kilometres of streets converted to pedestrian use, and 12,000 square metres of newly created green spaces.

The scheme simultaneously reduced the prominence of cars within the central area.

The timing coincided with Bradford’s designation as UK City of Culture 2025, enabling residents and visitors to navigate more easily between cultural venues and attractions.

Data compiled by Cycling UK indicates that the initiative contributed to a 25 per cent rise in city centre visitor numbers, providing support for independent businesses and enhancing cultural tourism opportunities.

Environmental gains were also recorded, with biodiversity levels increasing by between 24 and 27 per cent through the introduction of vegetation, trees and sustainable drainage solutions.

The publication further calculates that the scheme has produced social value exceeding 9.8 million pounds through volunteer activity, charitable contributions and educational programmes involving schools.

Duncan Dollimore, associate director at Cycling UK, explained that the organisation compiled a collection of compelling examples to illustrate public demand for improved conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, expressing confidence that local authorities would receive appreciation from residents for implementing such improvements.

The recognition arrives as construction continues on a separate major transport initiative along Thornton Road within the city.

Bradford Council confirmed last month that progress remains on schedule, with the initial phase now finished and subsequent work presently under way.

The 18-month programme seeks to strengthen connections between western areas of Bradford and the urban centre while enhancing safety and appeal for those travelling by foot, bicycle or public transport.

Completion is anticipated during 2028.
