Shiraaz Ali draws inspiration from Bradford archive for UK’s first Flower Carpet

The artist responsible for creating the United Kingdom’s inaugural Flower Carpet installation has explored the collections held at the Bradford Industrial Archive.

Shiraaz Ali spent time reviewing historical materials stored at the facility, gathering concepts and references to inform his upcoming project.

Social media content published by the local cultural organization on September 16 revealed that his creative approach draws influence from the region’s historic textile industry, mechanical innovations and skilled craftspeople who contributed to the area’s industrial character.

The installation will feature numerous floral elements arranged in close proximity, gradually forming an intricate visual composition that reflects Bradford’s identity.

Ali noted during his visit that the archival volumes demonstrated exceptional quality in their construction and contained extensive examples of pattern work and woven materials.

He described finding abundant creative stimulus within these historical pieces, explaining that the overall concept behind the Flower Carpet was designed to appeal to broad audiences.

The work functions as an embodiment of Bradford’s complete character, capturing the dynamism of the city and the essence of its residents and neighbourhoods.

Collections Manager Elizabeth Llabres from the Bradford Industrial Museum observed that the textile sector formed the foundation of the city’s development, establishing the urban centre’s current status and drawing a rich and varied population to the area.

She emphasised the specialised abilities and expertise present among local inhabitants, suggesting that materials preserved in the archive could motivate emerging creative practitioners.

Ali reflected that examining the historical fabrics and experiencing their construction techniques and intricate detailing proved invaluable to his creative process, expressing confidence that the flower carpet would develop through a comparable method.

He described a meaningful resonance between these historical textiles and the contemporary installation, noting that the fabrics represent completed objects constructed from countless individual strands unified through technical skill, artisanal expertise, dedication and considerable effort, which he found deeply appealing.

The 29-metre floral arrangement will occupy Centenary Square from Thursday 24 September through Sunday 27 September 2026.

The undertaking forms part of Nature Season, an initiative presenting nature-influenced cultural events throughout five administrative divisions of West Yorkshire.

The programme encompasses expansive artistic displays, performances held in outdoor settings, artistic pathways through woodland areas and collaborative horticulture activities.

The initiative was developed in partnership with Tapis de fleurs de Bruxelles, the voluntary body responsible for staging the Flower Carpet gathering at Grand-Place in the Belgian capital.

Financial backing comes from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the West Yorkshire Local Visitor Economy Partnership.

Contributing organisations comprise Bradford City Council, the local cultural body, alongside authorities from the neighbouring districts of Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield.
