Fresh tracks laid through Gledholt Tunnels for West Yorkshire rail upgrade

Major infrastructure improvements are advancing through historic tunnels near Huddersfield as part of a sweeping railway modernisation programme spanning the north of England.

Engineers are positioning fresh rail lines within the Grade II-protected Gledholt Tunnels, situated immediately west of Huddersfield’s main station.

The underground structures form a key component of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, a multi-billion pound initiative intended to transform passenger services across the region.

Heritage records indicate the northern tunnel entrance was constructed between 1845 and 1849, during what Historic England describes as the heroic age of railway building.

The design was the work of engineer Alfred Stanistreet Jee, with the southern entrance subsequently added between 1882 and 1886 under the direction of J J Lee.

Passengers are currently experiencing disruption as a sixteen-day closure of the line through Huddersfield continues.

The suspension is scheduled to conclude on October 4, with coach services maintaining connections while work proceeds.

According to a TRU representative, crews spent the weekend replacing track through the tunnel complex, describing the effort as essential for delivering increased service frequency, reduced journey times and improved reliability for travellers.

The organisation stated that the enhancements would sustain dependable train operations and elevate the passenger experience for years ahead, while acknowledging the inconvenience caused during the construction phase.

Beyond the tunnel work, activity is intensifying at Huddersfield Station itself.

Workers are erecting new canopy structures over additional platform areas currently under development.

Specialists are simultaneously carrying out detailed conservation work on the station’s distinctive roof, designed in the Euston architectural style.

Further along the route, substantial alterations are underway at Deighton to facilitate a four-track configuration through the corridor.

Local access remains restricted on Whitacre Street near the station while teams complete remaining elements of a replacement bridge structure.

The closure has enabled accelerated progress on a new footbridge at Deighton, which will incorporate lifts to ensure step-free movement between platforms.

Road users on the A62 Leeds Road are being directed along a newly completed bridge section following the demolition of a former overpass.

The existing structure was incompatible with the overhead electrical equipment required for the electrification programme, necessitating its removal to create adequate clearance beneath.

The programme has already reached significant milestones, with newly rebuilt stations at Morley and Mirfield representing among the most substantial completions delivered so far.

At Ravensthorpe, close to Dewsbury, construction continues on the Baker Viaduct, a prominent new structure within the scheme.

A contemporary fly-over junction is simultaneously taking shape in proximity to the location of the former station, which is being relocated approximately 200 metres to the west of its original position.
