A contestant from West Yorkshire has earned praise from judges during the opening episode of the latest series of The Great British Bake Off.
Tom made his first appearance in the Channel 4 programme, which aired at 8pm on Tuesday, September 22, alongside newly appointed judge Nigella Lawson.
The premiere episode focused on cake-based challenges.
Tom showcased a chocolate stout creation that judge Paul Hollywood characterised as very neat and professional.
His Black Forest interpretation, incorporating cherry compote and cherry brandy, also resonated positively with the judging panel.
Despite having no prior experience with coffee and walnut cake, Tom secured victory in the technical challenge.
During this assessment, he acknowledged not knowing what to do.
In conversation with presenter Noel Fielding, Tom observed that the proceedings appeared to be following his own strategy, suggesting that Nigella should have imposed her preferred approach earlier.
Nigella Lawson expressed that Tom’s winning entry represented her dream cake.
Tom stated that he was astonished by his success, crediting the method taught by his grandmother and expressing confidence that loved ones at home would feel proud.
For the final showstopper segment, competitors were allotted four hours to construct cakes shaped as self-portraits.
Tom opted for a classic carrot cake enhanced with cinnamon and finished with caramel sauce.
Paul Hollywood offered feedback about exercising caution with certain raising agents, while otherwise praising the effort.
Tom featured among the contenders for the Star Baker honour alongside fellow participants Gary and Mo.
Nigella commended the flavours in Tom’s work.
However, the accolade was awarded to 21-year-old law student Mo.
Tom is set to appear again during Biscuit Week as he seeks to capitalise on his promising beginning and claim the Star Baker position.
