University of Bradford reaches 2,000 overseas placement milestone

Published on

The University of Bradford has celebrated the completion of more than 2,000 international student placements through a government-backed mobility programme.

The institution reached the milestone via the Turing Scheme, which was established in 2021 to provide overseas experience opportunities for British students.

Since the initiative commenced, the university has obtained in excess of £3.6 million in funding.

The programme approaches its conclusion as Britain prepares to resume participation in the EU-supported Erasmus+ scheme in 2027.

Carlos Santos e Sousa, who serves as international operations and partnerships manager at the institution, outlined the achievements during the period spanning 2021/22 through 2025/26.

Students from Bradford who engaged with the scheme developed valuable international capabilities that contributed to their personal, academic and career advancement.

Data indicates that 92 percent of participants, representing 979 individuals, expressed high satisfaction with the support provided.

Sixty-four percent of participants, numbering 766, reported increased self-assurance following their time abroad, while 54 percent, totalling 652, felt their employment prospects had improved.

Santos e Sousa noted that beyond these statistics lies a more significant outcome: the chance for greater numbers of Bradford students to cultivate confidence, abilities, professional connections and international awareness through overseas placements.

The accomplishment also demonstrates the effective partnerships and collaboration between the university, partner institutions and students that have enabled these experiences to function smoothly.

During the concluding phase of the scheme, the university received £693,097 to facilitate 395 international placements.

Destinations have encompassed Asian nations, African countries, European locations and the United States.

Gabriel Bailey, 24, who earned a Bachelor of Engineering in civil and structural engineering, undertook work placements in Germany, China, Vietnam and the United States through the arrangement.

Bailey selected Bradford due to its seventh-place national ranking for civil engineering.

The experiences provided the opportunity to build self-belief while advancing both professionally and culturally.

The initial international journey presented challenges, having departed without existing acquaintances.

Subsequently, connections have been established across the globe, spanning locations from Australia to the Czech Republic.

Bailey described the experience as transformative and expressed gratitude to the university for facilitating these opportunities.

From the 2027/28 academic year onwards, the institution will participate in the Erasmus+ Programme, signalling a return to the EU-funded exchange initiative.

The Turing Scheme has facilitated student visits to numerous destinations worldwide, spanning nations across Asia, Africa and beyond.
