West Yorkshire pilots new system to help people with health conditions stay in work

A groundbreaking initiative is being trialed across West Yorkshire to assist individuals managing health conditions in remaining employed.

The region’s combined authority has joined more than 200 bodies involved in creating Britain’s inaugural Workplace Health System.

The programme, operating under the national Keep Britain Working banner, seeks to address economic inactivity linked to health issues while supporting sustained employment.

Sir Charlie Mayfield, the programme’s director, indicated that Britain has historically approached economic inactivity primarily as a welfare concern.

He emphasised that this perspective requires reconsideration, describing the issue as one of the most significant and achievable opportunities for national growth currently available.

Official figures indicate that 106,600 residents of West Yorkshire are presently not working due to chronic illness.

The newly developed framework intends to coordinate efforts between businesses, healthcare providers, and assistance organisations to implement support at earlier stages and avert unnecessary job terminations.

Tracy Brabin, the elected Mayor of West Yorkshire, stated that numerous individuals are being dismissed from meaningful employment despite the availability of appropriate assistance that could enable them to flourish.

She asserted that enabling people with health conditions and disabilities to access quality work represents both a moral imperative and a strategic means of harnessing untapped potential while fostering a more prosperous region.

The government has committed to supporting the initiative through a £3.5 billion package dedicated to employment assistance.
