New podcast explores life of Victorian Bingley poet John Nicholson

A fresh audio documentary is shining renewed attention on the story of a 19th-century poet from West Yorkshire.

The series has been created by the University of Leeds’ Cultural Collections and examines the life and enduring influence of John Nicholson, a working-class scribe who hailed from Bingley.

Named Death of a Poet, the production follows Nicholson’s travels through Bingley, Eldwick, Bradford and Saltaire, and investigates the ongoing relevance of his poetic works.

Dr RJ Wade, who serves as exhibitions curator and presenter, noted that the project originated from a modest display at the Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery, sparked by an intriguing discussion regarding a plaster bust housed within the Tony Harrison Archive.

The initiative has since developed into an extensive and emotionally charged audio exploration linking two of West Yorkshire’s most spirited poets.

Nicholson, who passed away in 1843 after tumbling into the River Aire while under the influence, gained recognition for his improvised verse, his roots in the working class, and his vivid existence.

Approximately 1,000 individuals are said to have been present at his burial ceremony, and Queen Victoria reportedly provided assistance to his widow and offspring.

The production incorporates insights from poets, artists, performers, historians, and a direct family relative.

The first season is presently being distributed on a weekly basis through the University of Leeds Cultural Collections and Galleries’ Gloves Off podcast service.
