An active building project at a hospital is providing adult students with practical experience to develop new professional skills.
Four participants from Bradford College recently completed a fortnight-long industry placement at Lynfield Mount Hospital as part of the college’s Adult Construction Skills programme.
The placement formed part of a £65 million rebuilding initiative at the Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust facility, focused on enhancing accommodation for patients and employees.
Louise Rigg, the programme director for the Lynfield Mount Hospital rebuilding scheme, stated that beyond improving conditions for service users and staff, the project aimed to create a meaningful and enduring benefit for surrounding neighbourhoods.
She expressed satisfaction that the initiative offered individuals the opportunity to acquire fresh abilities and consider future career paths.
Throughout the placement, the learners worked alongside McAvoy operatives, observing diverse responsibilities involved in erecting a purpose-built ward structure and modernising the existing premises.
One participant characterised the opportunity as remarkable, highlighting the encouraging atmosphere and valuable understanding gained regarding both manual trades and supervisory positions on a construction site.
John Wells, the scheme coordinator at the Construction Academy, noted that practical workplace exposure represented a vital component of the programme, enabling participants to witness theoretical knowledge being applied in real-world settings.
