Rising diesel costs are prompting renewed calls for additional fuel duty reductions to assist drivers in the Bradford area.
The cost of diesel has reached 196.1p per litre, placing it narrowly below the previous peak of 199.1p per litre documented in July 2022.
Petrol meanwhile stands at 172.4p per litre on average.
The Automobile Association is pressing the Government to prolong and enhance the existing fuel duty reduction to protect independent enterprises and those living outside urban centres.
Luke Bosdet, the AA’s representative on road fuel pricing, highlighted the tax implications embedded within pump prices.
For every 6p added to fuel costs, the Treasury receives an additional penny through value-added tax.
Current figures show petrol at approximately 172p per litre with diesel exceeding 196p per litre.
Twelve months previously, these fuels averaged 135p and 142p per litre respectively.
The additional 37p on petrol consequently contributes an extra 6p per litre to VAT income, while diesel adds 9p per litre to tax receipts.
Bosdet contended that those using diesel warrant extra support as prices draw near to the July 2022 benchmark.
Large corporations typically transfer elevated diesel expenses to consumers through variable fuel surcharges, though smaller operators lack this automatic mechanism.
This category encompasses taxi drivers, tradespeople, home maintenance services, veterinary practices, farriers, and numerous professions dependent on vehicles to serve their clients.
Rural populations face particular disadvantage, given their reliance on diesel for longer journeys necessitated by geographic circumstances.
With comparatively modest earnings, these communities require maximum possible assistance with transportation expenditures, Bosdet stated.
The administration presently maintains a 5p per litre fuel duty reduction, equivalent to 6p per litre once VAT is factored into the final pump price.
Regional fuel retailers offer diesel at varying rates.
Tesco outlets on Great Horton Road and Tesco Stores Limited charge 191.9p per litre.
Asda branches on Cemetery Road in Lidget Green and Rooley Lane list diesel at 192.7p per litre, with another Asda location on Canterbury Avenue offering it at 192.9p per litre.
Sainsbury’s on Harrogate Road provides diesel at 192.9p per litre.
Morrisons petrol stations on Waterside Road and Ingleby Road, Mayo Avenue, Rushton Avenue, and Bradford Road each charge 193.9p per litre.
