River Worth volunteers pull five strange items from Keighley river

Environmental enthusiasts retrieved ten bags of refuse alongside numerous larger objects from the River Worth during a recent clean-up operation.

The initiative was led by River Worth Friends, an organised body of volunteers committed to preserving the waterway and its surrounding environment in the Keighley area.

The collection occurred near Pitt Street in Keighley on September 22.

Among the accumulated materials were a shopping trolley, a cable reel, a pedal cycle, and a traffic cone.

Several unexpected items also featured in the haul.

A dartboard was among the more peculiar discoveries pulled from the water.

Observers noted the item appeared to be in relatively good condition and could potentially be restored with some cleaning.

A fire exit sign was another notable find, fitting into a similar category of unexpected objects alongside the commonly encountered traffic cone.

Investigators identified material believed to be associated with cannabis cultivation operations.

The discarded waste typically comprises vegetation, growing substrate, and specialised equipment used in such facilities.

Building materials were also discovered, including a toilet seat.

The presence of such items among the debris highlights the problem of illegal dumping in the waterway.

Wood represented one of the less unusual items removed during the operation.

River Worth Friends has conducted weekly gatherings since 2020.

According to their stated mission, members participate to safeguard and improve the river by clearing refuse and illegally dumped materials, maintaining footpaths along the riverbank, and managing community spaces.

The group also addresses invasive plant species, conducts water quality assessments, and promotes understanding of the river’s ecological significance.

Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Communities, Councillor Ian Walker, expressed concern regarding the prevalence of illegal dumping in waterways and surrounding areas.

He thanked the River Worth Friends collective for their efforts in addressing the issue.

The council maintains a firm stance against fly-tipping and is dedicated to preserving public spaces as clean, safe, and welcoming environments for residents and visitors alike.

Information concerning illegal dumping incidents can be reported through Bradford Council’s website or by telephoning 01274 431000.
