A newly constructed sports complex has begun serving the local community following a multi-million pound investment.

The Woodhall Sports Hub in Calverley received £9.6 million in funding and welcomed its first visitors on Saturday.

The development spans 8.3 hectares in the western part of Leeds.

The site offers three full-sized artificial pitches equipped with floodlighting, alongside two natural grass playing surfaces.

Additional amenities include outdoor recreation zones and a central pavilion containing refreshment facilities, rooms for community gatherings, and accommodation for sports participants.

The initiative emerged through collaboration between Leeds City Council and the Football Foundation, which directed £5.4 million toward the project through its Hubs programme.

The funding partnership also involved the Premier League, the Football Association, and national government bodies.

Council leadership emphasised the development’s role in addressing public health priorities.

The deputy leader of the local authority highlighted the administration’s commitment to enhancing wellbeing across Leeds, suggesting facilities of this nature would prove instrumental in achieving broader health objectives.

Officials expressed confidence that the pitches would prove popular among users while the pavilion and recreational spaces would serve broader community needs beyond sport.

The Football Foundation’s chief executive noted that residents throughout west Leeds would now enjoy improved access to grassroots sporting opportunities.

Representatives of the organisation indicated that such facilities created safe, accessible environments capable of producing meaningful effects on both physical and mental health while fostering social connections through multiple disciplines.

Operational responsibility lies with the National Football Trust, with day-to-day management handled by the charitable organisation Leisure United.

The leisure operator’s chief executive highlighted the significance of delivering high-quality playing surfaces to an area requiring additional grassroots capacity.

As a not-for-profit entity, the organisation confirmed that any revenue surplus generated by the facility would support outdoor sporting provision throughout the city.
