UK workers set for four-day weekends in 2027 and 2028

Workers in the United Kingdom stand to benefit from back-to-back extended weekends in the coming years following official confirmation of adjustments to the public holiday calendar.

The current year maintains the traditional arrangement, with breaks scheduled for early April, early May and late May.

When a designated holiday coincides with a weekend, provisions exist for compensatory time off.

In the year ending 2026, Boxing Day arrives on a Saturday, meaning the replacement day of rest has been fixed for the following Monday.

Significant modifications await the calendar of public holidays in the subsequent two years, with the arrangement in 2027 proving especially favourable for employees.

The Christmas period in 2027 delivers additional time away from work due to how the dates fall.

The main celebration falls on a Saturday with the day following landing on a Sunday.

Since both official holidays fall within the weekend, compensatory rest days are required.

Authorities have confirmed these replacements will occur on the Monday and Tuesday following the weekend, effectively providing a four-day break spanning from Saturday through Tuesday.

The following year offers another extended break to mark the start of the calendar.

The first day of 2028 falls on a Saturday, with the corresponding substitute holiday now confirmed for the Monday.

No further public holiday adjustments have been announced by authorities at this stage.

The complete schedule of public holidays for 2027 encompasses eight dates throughout the year.

The opening day of the year appears on a Friday.

The spring religious observance arrives on the final Friday of March, with the following Monday designated for the Easter Monday break.

The early May rest period occurs on the first Monday of that month, while the late May break falls on the final Monday.

The summer holiday occupies the final Monday of August.

The year concludes with two consecutive days off at the end of December, each being a substitute for a weekend holiday.
