FIREFIGHTERS “smashed” into a house in the Bradford district after an explosion this afternoon.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS) was called to reports of a fire at a home in Bingley at 2.44pm today.

Emergency services, including police and ambulance, rushed to the scene in Britannia Street, near the Britannia Bridge.

Deborah, a retired Bingley resident and Telegraph & Argus Camera Club member, spotted the “commotion” when she was walking along the Leeds Liverpool Canal and said she had heard fire crews had to smash through an upper-floor window.

A spokesperson for WYFRS said: “We were mobilised, but this was a false alarm, a cannister had exploded, causing smoke but no fire.”

A number of firefighters could be seen crowded round the building, with a ladder being used by one crew member to access an upper-floor window.

Mrs Clarke said: “I had been walking along the canal and I could see the commotion from the canal.

“As I walked across a Britannia Bridge, I could see a lot of firemen around the house and a ladder was put up to the second floor just before I arrived on scene.

“It was busy with the emergency services, but the situation seemed to be under control.

“I was thinking I hope everyone was safe and that there were no casualties.

“I heard a fireman tell a policeman that they didn’t know the cause of the fire as yet and I think the fireman said they smashed a window.”

The T&A has contacted West Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service for comment but has not received a response.
