Software giant Microsoft looks set to gain approval to build a data centre on a former power station site in West Yorkshire.

Jobs could be created if the company gets the go-ahead to develop the Skelton Grange site in Stourton, located to the south-east of Leeds.

The company said the facility would improve delivery of products and services while providing internet support for schools and healthcare settings.

Leeds City Council councillors have been recommended to approve the scheme at a plans panel meeting on Thursday, April 23.

A design statement highlighted that the site sits close to the M1 motorway and is under ten minutes from the city centre.

According to the report, the site’s closeness to Leeds city centre provides access to a skilled workforce while also providing employment opportunities for residents of nearby areas.

Power generation equipment and cooling systems would need to be installed if the scheme goes ahead.

Local ward councillors and community members took part in talks with the council before the formal submission, according to the statement.

According to the statement, feedback received during these discussions has shaped the final design of the scheme.

Council planning officers have recommended the scheme be passed to the city’s head planning officer for final sign-off, subject to certain conditions.
