A well-loved establishment in the Baildon area is getting ready to reopen its doors to regular customers this month, with frequent visitors relieved to see their favourite weekly haunt return after a temporary shutdown.
The Baildon Community Link Wellbeing Café, situated inside the Baildon Community Centre, will recommence services at the same time as an Over 50s Open Day planned for Friday, April 24, having suspended operations in February.
Recent posts on social media from Baildon Community Link have shown that recruitment discussions have taken place to take on fresh staff members, and the café’s return will align with a broader range of activities aimed at elderly residents.
For dedicated patrons, the reopening marks the end of a difficult period of not knowing what would happen.
Peter Newby, who has frequented the venue for roughly five years, explained how the unexpected closure impacted him far more deeply than simply missing out on a weekly meal.
The retired visitor said Thursdays had always been his designated day at the café, waking up, having breakfast, and arriving at approximately 10am, bringing a book, securing a seat, chatting with friends, and staying for the lunchtime meal.
The venue, which traditionally offered a hot, homemade lunch on Thursdays, quickly became a crucial part of Mr Newby’s weekly routine.
He noted that you would soon get to know other regulars, with a group of around eight people invariably seated at the same table. It was a welcoming environment in every sense – both cosy in temperature and friendly in atmosphere.
Mr Newby described the food as simple but satisfying, saying the meals were not fancy but consisted of genuine home-cooked fare. Diners would receive a main dish, pudding, and a drink. Beef pie ranked among his personal favourites.

Beyond the sustenance, Peter highlighted the café’s vital role in tackling isolation.
He said there were quiz activities, board games, and sometimes local officers would visit to offer advice – it was not just about eating – it was about being part of a community.
A small selection of borrowed books and jigsaw puzzles also proved popular, allowing customers to borrow reading material or take puzzles home to complete and return.
When the café closed, Mr Newby noticed an immediate impact.
He said there was a sudden realisation that he should be heading to the café at that moment, only to remember that was no longer possible, and it genuinely left a gap in his weekly routine.
Although Mr Newby has kept in touch with some café friends at other local venues, he admitted the closure still left something missing.
The news that the café would restart operations at the end of the month was welcomed warmly.
Mr Newby said it was tremendous news and he was looking forward to returning on Thursdays.
While Mr Newby remains unsure about who will operate the café going forward, he hoped it would maintain the same hospitable atmosphere that set it apart.
He said the café meant a great deal to many people, and knowing it was coming back was reassuring.
The Baildon Community Link Over 50s Open Day will take place from 1pm to 3pm on Friday, April 24, with entertainment, refreshments, and information about volunteer opportunities.
