Expert Advice on Limiting Young Children’s Screen Time

Published on

Digital displays have become ubiquitous in modern life – they appear everywhere prompting us to observe, tap and engage, whether for leisure, purchases or medical appointments.

While these devices serve practical purposes, it’s crucial that households don’t grow excessively dependent on them for keeping young children occupied. This is why the new official recommendations are welcomed, suggesting that parents and caregivers limit screen time for children under five to no more than one hour daily.

The guidance also recommends that when children do use screens, families should steer clear of rapid-paced, social media-type videos as well as products and applications utilizing artificial intelligence. Maintaining screens-free periods during meals and before bed is also emphasized, with alternatives such as ambient music, board games, reading together and creative activities being suggested. Officials additionally advise that adults should view content alongside youngsters rather than allowing unsupervised usage.

Research indicates that prolonged screen exposure during early childhood can affect linguistic progression, and extended periods spent before displays may adversely affect rest, physical movement, imaginative play and social engagement. The committee developing these recommendations also suggests that caregivers should demonstrate positive digital behavior, reflect on their own viewing habits in front of children and consider implementing device-free time for the entire household.

The NSPCC endorses this guidance and acknowledges that the early years represent a vital period for establishing healthy practices regarding children’s physical and technological development. Numerous households find managing rapidly evolving digital landscapes challenging.
