A shop situated in Bradford’s Tong Street is helping local people regain their confidence and self-worth.
The Bradford outlet, among the first social supermarkets in the country, allowed customers to save £1,386,500 on food bills during the year while providing 1,233,020 meals and preventing 518 tonnes of produce from being discarded.
However, its impact reaches far beyond simply selling goods.
The charity takes a wider view, tackling the root causes of food poverty and isolation through life-changing support and activities.
Gary Stott, the organisation’s executive chairman, said the impact of food insecurity goes beyond just getting enough to eat for yourself and your family, and that the wide-ranging negative effects on people’s lives need to be acknowledged and tackled.
He stated that Community Shop fundamentally believes that with the right support, anyone can create their own future despite challenging circumstances. Their research demonstrates that people need diverse forms of help, from support for mental health to practical skills development.
He noted that Community Shop aims to help individuals comprehend their personal circumstances and restore confidence in themselves and their abilities, which is why they appreciate members sharing their stories in the annual Impact Report.
Research showed that the support helped people form relationships with others in 95 per cent of cases, improved general wellbeing in 92 per cent, and boosted optimism about future possibilities in 89 per cent.
Farah, who joined the Tong Street branch in Bradford, arrived in the UK from Pakistan not long ago. She described how her children and herself have taken part in various events, and her nine-year-old loves the cooking sessions. She noted that while the affordable food is excellent, the people involved have made the real difference.
She emphasised that as a Muslim household, having halal options and having their cultural and religious traditions respected is vital. She said that Jenny from Community Shop has always been extremely thoughtful and mindful of these requirements. For example, Jenny arranged an Eid gathering where families could cook for the local community and made certain halal meat was provided.
She observed that becoming part of this group has built her own confidence and helped her children feel more assured too. She concluded that it is more than just somewhere to buy food – she would struggle without it.
Nationwide, Community Shop supported more than 36,000 families during the year and enabled members to make collective savings of £12.7 million.
