The historic railway will take passengers on a journey evoking wartime Britain as the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway holds its 1940s Weekend from May 15 to 17. The five-mile heritage route will be transformed into a period-themed experience featuring entertainment, historical re-enactments, antique exhibits and live performances at each station.
A KWVR representative explained that the weekend provides a diverse programme combining heritage rail journeys, musical entertainment and historical interpretation, offering a family event that honours and celebrates wartime social history.
The occasion kicks off with a 1940s-themed dance at the Oxenhope Exhibition Shed on Friday night, showcasing wartime musical classics by Kitty La Mare and The Ashby Little Big Band.
Heritage steam locomotives will operate throughout the three days, transporting passengers between Keighley and Oxenhope while each station along the route takes on its own distinctive 1940s atmosphere.
On Saturday and Sunday, Oxenhope will feature live musical acts, a vintage market and refreshments within the Exhibition Shed.
Haworth will showcase historical re-enactors and a classic tea dance, while Oakworth will present living history exhibitions examining various aspects of life during the war years.
Ingrow and Keighley stations will also offer period-themed entertainment and refreshments, delivering a cohesive 1940s experience across the entire line.
Passengers will encounter re-enactors sharing wartime stories while travelling on the trains, with the onboard bar also accessible throughout the weekend.
The confirmed lineup includes Lady Lindy, Anthony Mason’s George Formby tribute show, Blondies in Harmony, the Gas Light Trio and the Hebden Bridge Ukulele Group.
Additional attractions feature Haworth Home Guard, ARP re-enactors, a fairground organ and appearances by Sir Arthur ‘Bomber’ Harris and Lady Ann.
Attendees are welcome to wear 1940s-style clothing to enhance the atmosphere, though this is not required.
