Bradford butcher’s face printed on boxers flying off shelves

A Bradford meat trader has demonstrated how leveraging digital platforms can enable a conventional enterprise to flourish, by converting internet fame into a profitable range of branded goods.

Alongside premium cuts and steaks, shoppers at the establishment can also pick up various items of apparel – including underwear bearing the proprietor’s likeness.

Jon, who operates Taplin’s Butchers in Darley Street Market, explained the concept emerged organically as the company began documenting its transition online following the closure and relocation of Bradford’s former covered market.

Digital expansion

During the period when the business shifted from the old market premises to Darley Street, a concentrated effort was made on social platforms to ensure patrons were aware of the new location, he noted.

Many customers previously travelled into Bradford solely to visit the old market before returning straight home, with little familiarity of the wider city, he added.

Digital channels were initially employed as a functional means of keeping customers updated, particularly those who visited only periodically.

The priority was preventing people from arriving to find the market shuttered and subsequently losing interest in the business, he explained.

Increasing digital reach

As Jon posted updates regarding the transition, interest in the enterprise expanded beyond its established clientele, with content generating engagement and prompting online discussion.

This attention eventually sparked a more playful concept.

The notion of introducing branded merchandise emerged, he said.

The range expanded from T-shirts and headwear, growing organically from there.

Underwear creates a buzz

The item generating the most conversation proved to be shorts printed with Jon’s image.

It was essentially intended as a bit of amusement, he laughed.

Selling boxes of the product was never anticipated, yet customers continued purchasing them directly.

Nevertheless, Jon noted that humour and familiarity have helped differentiate Taplin’s from competitors.

Spotting someone sporting one of the establishment’s T-shirts while out and about essentially amounts to complimentary promotion, he observed.

From amusement to commitment

While some patrons initially purchase the goods as a novelty, the items also represent endorsement of the business, the butcher explained.

Customers desire a connection to the brand, which demonstrates commitment and maintains visibility in people’s thoughts, he elaborated.

Despite the lighthearted approach, the enterprise continues drawing clientele from considerably further afield than Bradford itself.

Visitors arrive from Manchester, Wakefield, and even Scotland, with some making the journey from Scotland biannually, he noted.

Giving tradition a contemporary edge

Jon considers that establishing a distinctive identity is becoming increasingly significant in industries that once relied solely on neighbourhood reputation.

The practice of visiting a butcher’s shop and knowing the butcher personally is diminishing, and social media assists in reviving that connection, he observed.

Although the merchandise began as a jest, Jon now views it as a legitimate illustration of how independent traders can evolve and remain pertinent.

The scenario could serve as a textbook example of modern business marketing, he told the Telegraph & Argus.

This represents contemporary promotional strategy.
