Families with newborn babies are taking advantage of upgraded accommodation areas at Airedale General Hospital.

The hospital’s neonatal department now features three refurbished parent rooms that offer a calmer and more pleasant environment, thanks to Yorkshire joinery firm J Carey Design (JCD).

Situated roughly a mile away from the hospital site, JCD identified this project as a valuable chance to give back to the local area after hospital staff indicated where assistance would prove most useful.

Jodie Hearnshaw, charity manager at Airedale Hospital & Community Charity, explained that the team was deeply thankful to J Carey Design for the attention and care shown in renovating the three family rooms on the neonatal ward.

For parents experiencing some of the most difficult and emotionally demanding times, having a tranquil, welcoming area close to their child makes a tremendous difference.

These carefully considered spaces offer comfort, respect and empathy during a period when it matters most.

The parent rooms support families whose babies are getting ready to leave the main ward and begin planning for discharge.

Previously, these areas did not possess the cosiness and comfort needed during what can be an emotionally demanding transition.

JCD reached out to the hospital charity to establish which areas required attention most urgently and then put forward a proposal to redesign the rooms.

The work encompassed bespoke bedside tables and storage units, wall-mounted shelving solutions, illuminated picture panels, light-blocking window coverings, newly re-covered reclining seating, and materials and surfaces meeting healthcare regulations.

JCD partnered with other local businesses to carry out the improvements, namely Readshaw Interiors, Regal Blinds, and Upholstery2U.

Decorative pieces for the rooms were provided by Jo Overend, a Yorkshire children’s author and illustrator, who wanted to give something back to the hospital for the treatment received when her own children were born.

She said her aim was to bring a touch of hope and comfort to all who view them.

This undertaking fits with JCD’s broader commitment to social value, prioritising work that delivers real improvements in the regions where the company operates.

By merging professional expertise with staff insights and local needs, JCD expects the redesigned areas to offer peace and reassurance to families during a significant transitional phase.
