A fresh exhibition pays tribute to the traditional skills that have defined a region’s manufacturing legacy and cultural identity.

Entitled Made by Many Hands, the display opens at Bradford Industrial Museum on Saturday, May 2, presenting artisan techniques originating from throughout the Bradford area.

The showcase includes specialist crafts connected to the locality, with several featuring on the Heritage Crafts Organisation’s Red List of crafts facing extinction.

James Steward, the museums and galleries manager, explained that the exhibition narrates the histories of traditional crafts and their practitioners in the Bradford district through items held in the collections.

He noted that the display begins with a wonderful occasion allowing visitors across all age groups to engage directly with various crafts.

A programme of workshops has also been arranged for those seeking a more thorough grasp of particular artisan techniques.

Among the crafts presented are stained glass work, patchwork, canal art, wooden clog production, handknitting using knitting sheaths, bicycle frame construction, bobbin lacemaking, letterpress printing, dressmaking, brick production, and blacksmithing.

A special Bank Holiday event is scheduled for Monday, May 4, giving visitors the opportunity to tour the exhibition, discover more about the crafts, and take part in activities linked to the displays.

Clogaire, a clog dancing collective based in Shipley, will present clog dancing demonstrations at midday and 2pm.

A series of related events and reservable workshops will run throughout the exhibition’s duration.

These activities will take place both within the exhibition area and in the Heritage Craft Room, a dedicated space for interactive learning in an inviting setting.

Workshops already arranged include leatherworking and bobbin lacemaking.

Bradford Industrial Museum contains permanent exhibitions of textile equipment, steam-powered machinery, engineering breakthroughs, and automobiles.

Depending on the time of visit, guests can witness the sights, sounds and distinctive odours of rotating machinery, observe the spinning frame operating at full capacity, and benefit from the knowledge of volunteers who possess complete mastery of printing, weaving, and blacksmithing techniques.

The new exhibition seeks to expand public awareness of traditional crafts while acknowledging their impact on Bradford’s manufacturing past.

It also aims to generate renewed enthusiasm for crafts that face the threat of vanishing entirely.

The narratives and artefacts on display showcase Bradford’s extensive heritage of creation and craftsmanship, paying tribute to the men and women whose expertise established the district’s character.

Workshops provide an uncommon opportunity to acquire practical knowledge directly from skilled practitioners and investigate the methods underpinning each craft.
