Is £450,000 too steep for an electric Ferrari?

The Italian luxury sports car maker is betting heavily on its new fully electric model, though not all investors appear convinced by the gamble.

The newly unveiled Ferrari Luce made its debut this week, sending shares lower and erasing nearly £3 billion from the valuation of the world’s most prestigious exotic car manufacturer.

Ferrari described the Luce as marking a direction toward tomorrow while establishing the goal of producing not simply an electric Ferrari, but a completely reimagined Ferrari built for heightened driver involvement and superior performance with a distinctive and identifiable character.

However, certain enthusiasts argued the vehicle is missing precisely that quality, unkindly suggesting it resembles a blend of a Tesla and a Honda Accord EV.

Motoring publication Auto Express labelled it Ferrari’s most divisive offering, noting its striking appearance.

Others, though, praised the courageous styling and expressed enthusiasm about viewing it in person.

The contentious styling was entrusted to LoveFrom, the design studio headed by Sir Jony Ive, the individual responsible for creating the iPod and iPhone, alongside Marc Newson.

Ferrari stated that bringing in a team from outside the Ferrari Design Studio under Flavio Manzoni’s leadership introduced a fresh outlook and creative exchange, allowing a novel design vocabulary to emerge. LoveFrom received the creative latitude required to establish the design direction from the beginning, translating this language into a genuine Ferrari experience. The electric power system, Ferrari-developed engines and sophisticated drivetrain deliver an entirely fresh structure that uniquely blends exceptional Ferrari capabilities with enhanced spaciousness.

Whatever the measured styling, the vehicle will undoubtedly deliver Ferrari-level performance, reaching 0-120mph in just over six seconds.

John Elkann, Ferrari’s chairman, remarked that with the Luce, the company is once more pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved.

He added that rather than merely launching a new vehicle, they are opening a new era that transforms their vision into reality while honouring Ferrari’s legacy of anticipating and moulding tomorrow.

Such a significant leap in product development could only have been accomplished through innovation in methodology, which explains why they opted to pursue fresh partnerships, including the collaboration with LoveFrom for the design.

Ferrari declined to disclose the Luce’s price, though speculation indicates it will start at approximately £460,000 in Britain.
