Whiskey Down wins approval for lap dancing licence

A strip club has secured permission to keep operating despite protests from a local heritage organisation.

Whiskey Down can remain open near the historic Corn Exchange and Kirkgate Market after Leeds Civic Trust raised objections.

Under licensing regulations, such establishments must seek annual renewal of their sexual entertainment venue permits.

The company behind the venue, Tokyo Industries, provides employment for approximately 70 staff in Leeds and manages similar establishments in Manchester and Newcastle.

Paddy Whur, speaking on behalf of the club, highlighted that the Crown Street location stocked premium whiskeys from across the globe.

Addressing the licensing panel, he described the establishment as a sophisticated venue with an extensive drinks selection.

Although the Civic Trust did not attend the meeting, it had previously expressed worries about effects on neighbouring historic structures and a place of worship.

Their written objection stated that numerous significant historic buildings surrounded the location, including the Grade I-listed Corn Exchange used for family purposes, and that it stood beside a building serving a religious function, the Kadampa Buddhist Centre.

Whur noted that when Whiskey Down first received its licence in 2017, authorities had considered the position suitable.

He pointed out that the business had operated without issue for nine years, with yearly renewals approved.

In 2013, Leeds City Council imposed stricter regulations limiting how many lap dancing venues could operate in the city centre and where they could be situated.

Whur warned that without renewal, jobs would be lost and the business would be forced to shut.

He contended that the local environment had not altered in any way that would justify refusing the application.

According to Whur, having the venue open with surveillance cameras and security personnel actually improved safety in the area behind the Corn Exchange.

Following the session at Leeds Civic Hall, councillors voted to grant the licence renewal.
