Local residents unite to address social isolation with innovative solutions

A fresh community initiative is uniting residents to combat isolation in this West Yorkshire settlement.

The Shelf In Bloom programme has revitalised sections of the village through textile art installations, window exhibitions, and garden enhancements.

Managed by the Shelf Wellbeing Community Association, the initiative represents the latest expansion of the group’s efforts to address loneliness and enhance health among local residents, particularly senior citizens.

How it began

Cathryn Zurek, chairperson of the association, explained that Shelf contains the highest concentration of elderly residents in the area, and they found themselves cut off and isolated following the pandemic, especially after the village hall closed and went on the market.

She noted that the village lacks general facilities, with the medical practice being the only accessible building available, and very few activities were taking place at that time.

Research indicates that loneliness affects health similarly to smoking, which prompted them to take positive action.

They initially introduced simple gatherings such as morning coffee sessions, reading groups, rambling clubs, and craft circles before expanding to Christmas celebrations, wellness events, fitness sessions, and presentations about local services. This year they chose to stage a non-competitive Shelf In Bloom occasion.

The project combines textile art, handmade crafts, and horticulture, with the goal of uniting the entire neighbourhood.

Previously volunteers and organisations operated independently, so they chose to collaborate toward a shared objective.

The association secured funding through a combination of grants and its own money-raising activities.

The village is becoming more vibrant

According to her, community reaction has been tremendous, with involvement from educational institutions, retailers, enterprises, the medical practice, volunteer organisations, and people of all ages.

Ms Zurek observed that Shelf is beginning to appear more cheerful, with residents gaining direction and connection by taking part.

They have also been tidying neglected pathways alongside embellishing communal areas.

Residents are invited to join the Shelf In Bloom online communities to upload images and maintain contact.

A dedicated crafting session took place on July 1 at Witchfield Grange residential complex on Brow Lane.

Attendees adorned their windows as part of the village-wide undertaking.

Ms Zurek expressed gratitude to Andrea Moore and Mandy Bailey for ornamenting the war memorial, as well as Bethel Chapel and St Michaels for their garden presentations. She additionally commended Gordon Frankland for restoring a seat.

The association intends to establish Shelf In Bloom as an yearly occasion.

Preparations are already being made to sow bulbs during the autumn period. An event to gather opinions and express appreciation over afternoon tea is also being arranged.
