Fresh initiative seeks to drive tourism to landmark of cultural importance

Published on

Part of a structure deemed to be of exceptional importance could be transformed into a Pilates facility should fresh proposals receive the green light.

Salts Mill in Saltaire ranks among the most significant structures across the entire Bradford area.

As the focal point of the Saltaire UNESCO World Heritage Site, this edifice formerly operated as one of Yorkshire’s most energetic mills and now draws substantial tourism.

What do the fresh proposals entail?

A fresh submission put forward to Bradford Council would see unused space within the extensive mill complex repurposed as a 238 square metre Pilates studio.

The proposals, submitted by Heckmondwike-based Mileta Sports LTD, would further enhance footfall to Saltaire according to the company.

What exactly is Salts Mill?

The former textile manufacturing facility was established by Sir Titus Salt and commenced operations in 1853.

The entirety of Saltaire village was constructed around the mill, providing employees with residences, communal green space, educational establishments and religious venues.

The Grade II* listed structure accommodates a range of enterprises, such as outlets for books, art and furnishings alongside a café, dining establishment and office accommodation.

It also houses a gallery showcasing numerous pieces by celebrated Bradford artist David Hockney and has recently become home to the Peace Museum – a unique institution devoted to the peace movement.

What the submission states

Should the fresh proposals gain approval, a new wellness space will shortly join these existing enterprises.

The planning submission, to transform a former gymnasium/dance space into a Pilates studio, describes the application site as situated within Salts Mill, one of the key structures forming part of the historic Saltaire settlement.

The site falls within the Saltaire Conservation Area and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salts Mill was built between 1851 and 1853 by Sir Titus Salt and is acknowledged as a heritage asset of exceptional significance.

The premises have previously served commercial and office functions and currently consist of open-plan accommodation with related ancillary facilities.

The unit stands empty and requires renovation to enable reoccupation.

The proposed development will result in a minimal effect on the significance of the heritage asset.

The proposal delivers several public advantages including reuse of an empty commercial unit, investment in the maintenance and continued utilisation of the structure, establishment of a health and wellbeing facility, greater visitor activity within Salts Mill and backing for the sustained viable operation of the heritage asset.

A verdict on the planning submission is anticipated during August.
