Police have reported a motorist after discovering the individual was not wearing a seatbelt while carrying eight large watermelons through Bradford.

Officers from the West Yorkshire Police Operation Steerside initiative observed the driver on Legrams Lane.

Although officers found the unusual cargo amusing, they highlighted that the fruit could have been hazardous had it not been adequately fastened.

On social media, Operation Steerside commented that anyone failing to wear a seatbelt would be described as foolish.

The officers noted that watermelons generally weigh between 16 and 20 pounds each and could inflict serious harm if propelled around a vehicle’s interior during an accident.

Officers emphasised that all loads must be properly secured to minimise the chance of injury to those inside the vehicle.

The officers issued a report for the seatbelt violation and made certain the watermelons were properly fastened before permitting the driver to proceed on their journey.
