An Ilkley-based campaign organisation is staging a public gathering featuring the actual individuals who appear in Dirty Business, the documentary series examining the wastewater crisis, privately-financed utilities and regulatory failures.

The session will be led by producer Jo Bullman, with footage from the series screened before a conversation between the contributors and the Yorkshire Mayors, followed by an open question segment for attendees.

According to Professor Becky Malby of the Ilkley Clean River Group, the organisation learned this week about yet another environmental deterioration for Yorkshire Water, with the economic regulator placing the company in the lowest category and the chief executive expressing her dissatisfaction with the firm’s results for the third consecutive year while simultaneously receiving an elevated salary along with an additional bonus funded by shareholders.

Ash Smith, Peter Hammond, Rob Forrester – the Environment Agency insider – and Cliff Roney, who worked for Thames Water, will make up the Dirty Business panel. Audience members will have ample opportunity to raise concerns and voice frustration regarding the condition of British waterways and the failure of central government to safeguard the natural environment and ensure value for consumers. Tracy Brabin is anticipated to push for the company to be brought into public ownership.

Admission is free and those attending will be able to challenge elected officials to increase their efforts to protect rivers, lakes and coastal areas.

The gathering runs from 1.30pm to 4pm on Thursday August 6 at St George’s Conference Centre in Leeds.
