A man has been prosecuted after being caught consuming alcohol in a public area where such activity is prohibited.
A police officer on duty in Shipley observed Karl Johnson drinking on Market Street on January 23.
Shipley town centre falls within a Public Space Protection Order that restricts anti-social street drinking across various locations in the Bradford District.
Following the violation, Johnson, who is 60 years old and lives on Otley Road, was issued with a £100 penalty.
The amount remained unpaid, leading Bradford Council to pursue charges against Johnson for failing to adhere to the protection order.
He entered a guilty plea during his appearance at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court on Friday.
Dennis Rice, presenting the case on behalf of the Council, stated that an officer on patrol received reports of street drinking and subsequently observed the defendant with alcohol in his possession consuming it directly, in breach of the PSPO.
The court heard that the £100 penalty was not paid, though following discussions with Johnson it transpired that he had been attempting to contact the court regarding settlement rather than the Council.
Rice indicated that due to this confusion he was prepared to minimise the costs sought by the Council.
Johnson was directed to pay a £40 fine, £16 court surcharge and £75 in costs to Bradford Council.
