West Yorkshire: 1,559 firework incidents but only 10 arrests in year

West Yorkshire experienced more than 1,500 incidents linked to fireworks over the course of a year, according to official data, though law enforcement officials made only a small number of arrests during that period.

Information obtained through freedom of legislation requests revealed that West Yorkshire Police documented 1,559 cases involving anti-social conduct connected to fireworks spanning from September 2025 through August 2026.

Despite this substantial figure, just 10 individuals were detained for fireworks-related violations across the same timeframe.

Officers investigated reports of criminal activity involving fireworks and urged members of the public possessing relevant information to communicate with authorities, according to statements from law enforcement representatives.

Of the ten detentions recorded, eight involved individuals aged under 18 found in possession of fireworks.

The remaining two detentions concerned possession of Category 4 fireworks, which are professional-grade devices not authorised for general public sale.

When asked specifically about incidents occurring during restricted hours, the police force indicated it could not supply that particular breakdown of information.

The recorded total represented cases closed as fireworks-related anti-social behaviour incidents.

Elected representatives responded to the statistics by calling for improved documentation of complaints, particularly those concerning late-night fireworks activity.

One councillor emphasised that the figures demonstrated a meaningful level of fireworks-related anti-social behaviour throughout West Yorkshire.

The representative noted that the arrests documented involved possession violations rather than instances of fireworks being discharged after 11pm.

This distinction highlighted an area requiring attention, according to the elected official.

Residents were lodging complaints about nocturnal fireworks activity, yet comprehensive data regarding the specific scale of post-11pm incidents remained insufficient.

The councillor advocated for collaborative action involving police, the local authority and additional organisations, alongside clearer guidance for community members regarding reporting procedures and potential outcomes.

Law enforcement stated that partnership work continued and enforcement measures would be pursued against those violating legislation.

The force highlighted ongoing coordination with external organisations to safeguard communities from fireworks-related criminal activity.

Planning for this year’s bonfire period was underway, with operational activities scheduled in various communities.

Increased officer presence on local streets during the bonfire season was also anticipated.

One local campaigner expressed reservations about whether the figures accurately represented the actual situation, noting that numerous incidents likely went unreported because individuals believed nothing would result from making complaints.

Some residents felt apprehensive about reporting concerns while others remained uncertain about which agency to contact.

The discussion emerged as the local authority progressed with initiatives to address problematic fireworks usage.

Earlier in the year, the council had introduced a campaign aimed at reducing firework nuisance and enhancing public understanding of the issue.

A council spokesperson observed that the statistics illustrated the extent of problems caused by nuisance fireworks across the region.

The campaign sought to highlight the distress experienced by many due to the actions of a minority.

The initiative also encouraged public participation in a national government consultation regarding potential legislative changes to fireworks regulations.

Representatives from the relevant government department had been invited to meet with stakeholders and residents at the civic building in September to provide them with direct insight into the scope of the issue and the rationale behind calls for enhanced legal controls.
