Yorkshire CCC launches Dickie Bird Young Player of the Year award

Yorkshire County Cricket Club has unveiled a new category at this year’s End of Season Awards dedicated to commemorating one of the sport’s most iconic figures.

The Dickie Bird Young Player of the Year award will recognise outstanding breakthrough performances from emerging cricketers.

Bird passed away last September, having reached 92 years of age.

In the period preceding his death, he remained a regular presence at fixtures and club occasions hosted by his beloved county.

A club statement described how few individuals in international cricket commanded such universal affection and respect.

Born in Barnsley, Bird’s involvement with the sport commenced at Headingley before he ascended to become arguably the most widely recognised and warmly regarded umpire the game has ever produced.

Across a distinguished career spanning 66 Test matches and three World Cup finals, Bird served as an ambassador for cricket on a worldwide scale.

His reputation extended beyond his characteristic white cap and distinctive mannerisms to encompass an unwavering commitment to fairness and honesty.

Throughout his tenure as an official between 1970 and 1998, Bird had also established himself as a capable player prior to his officiating career.

His connection to Yorkshire cricket remained a defining feature of his identity, prompting the club to establish this accolade as a fitting commemoration of that relationship.

The honour will be awarded annually to one male and one female competitor who best demonstrate the qualities associated with a breakthrough campaign.

The recipient will be celebrated for capitalising on their opportunity and providing supporters with an indication of what lies ahead for the club.

The intention mirrors Bird’s own trajectory, which began with a breakthrough at Yorkshire before his subsequent influence on cricket globally, and seeks to highlight the next wave of talent emerging from the county.

Bird’s niece, Rachel Wyatt, expressed the family’s appreciation for the recognition, noting that cricket and this particular club occupied a central place in his life.

She observed that he held particular fondness for young competitors establishing themselves in the sport.

She indicated that he would have been deeply moved to witness this award presented to those embarking on their initial significant steps, just as he once did at Headingley.

She described it as a fitting and sincere memorial to someone who dedicated his entire existence to the sport he cherished.
