Theatrical entertainment combining period steam locomotion with a celebrated Victorian narrative is returning to a historic West Yorkshire railway line this yuletide season.
The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway will present performances of Charles Dickens’ seasonal favourite aboard heritage carriages throughout December, with audiences embarking on an evening journey through the picturesque Worth Valley.
Travellers aboard the vintage railway experience will encounter the tale’s central figures, including the miserly protagonist, his deceased business partner, and the spectral trio who guide him through recollections, present observations, and visions of what lies ahead.
The production places spectators within the story itself, surrounded by the authentic atmosphere of the Victorian railway era.
According to Noel Hartley, the railway’s marketing manager, the adaptation has established itself as a cornerstone of the winter calendar.
The combination of live dramatic performance with travel aboard one of Britain’s best-preserved heritage lines produces an occasion that resonates across age groups, whether viewers are revisiting a familiar narrative or encountering it for the first time.
The presentation commences at 5pm and 7pm on various dates throughout the month.
Ticket costs vary according to the selected performance, with prices set at £39.50 for the opening weekends of December, rising to £45 for mid-month showings, £48 for the penultimate weekend, and £35 for the final outing on Christmas Eve.
Antique railway carriages serve as the backdrop for the unfolding drama, with the route connecting preserved Victorian-era stations.
Previous presentations have attracted audiences from across the region and beyond, with the combination of atmospheric steam-hauled travel and theatrical storytelling proving particularly appealing to families, companions, and social groups seeking a distinctive seasonal outing.
Advance reservations are advisable given the popularity demonstrated in earlier years, with full details regarding scheduling and availability accessible through the railway’s official online platform.
