A community engagement initiative aimed at expanding local influence over council decisions is gaining momentum in the Yorkshire city.
The gathering was chaired by the council leader, Councillor Stephen Place, and brought together delegates representing various town and parish councils alongside members of charitable organisations and grassroots collectives.
These participants discussed the current level of their participation in civic governance and explored potential improvements.
During the proceedings, the council leader emphasised the advantages of transferring authority to local communities, noting that those living in specific areas possess the most intimate understanding of the particular issues and possibilities facing their neighbourhoods.
Councillor Place further stated that the gathering provided a valuable forum for considering how these arrangements might be strengthened to guarantee that residents maintain meaningful engagement with the democratic process.
The region currently operates with 21 separate town and parish councils in addition to its network of area committees, which serve as intermediate decision-making bodies between the main council and individual neighbourhoods.
