West Yorkshire’s publicly controlled bus network launches next spring

Published on

West Yorkshire’s inaugural publicly run bus services are scheduled to commence operations during spring next year.

The authority responsible for the scheme, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, will determine which routes are operated and what prices passengers pay.

Two private operators have been appointed to deliver the services under contractual agreements.

First West Yorkshire has been awarded the contract to operate routes serving Huddersfield alongside certain areas within Leeds.

Meanwhile, Transdev Blazefield will provide coverage for Dewsbury.

The region’s mayor, Tracy Brabin, described the contracts as marking progress toward enhanced public transport options for residents.

These franchises constitute elements of the Weaver Network, an initiative designed to create a coordinated public transport system across West Yorkshire.

The scheme aims to bring together bus routes, rail services, pedestrian infrastructure and cycling facilities under a single unified approach.

Long-term proposals include the integration of a mass-transit tram network serving the wider region.
