The Topic Folk Club in Bradford is commemorating seven decades of continuous operation, establishing itself as the oldest continuously running folk club globally.
The milestone will be observed through a dedicated outdoor music festival scheduled at Darley Street Market on Saturday, October 3.
The celebration, branded as TopicFest, will run from 11.45am until 5pm.
The programme encompasses a diverse range of musical genres including folk, blues, jazz, skiffle, and bhangra, reflecting the club’s broad musical interests accumulated over its lengthy history.
Chris Gaffney, representing the Topic Folk Club, reflected on the achievement by acknowledging the original founders who established the venue seven decades ago.
The organisation noted that since those early gatherings, the club has maintained its position as a gathering place for performers and audiences within the city centre.
The event roster features several performers with local connections.
Bella Gaffney, a singer-songwriter originally from Bradford, will appear alongside the Panjabi folk and bhangra ensemble Anjaana and folk artist Lewis Pugh.
Additional confirmed acts include the Wharfedale Wayzgoose Border Morris side, the songwriting partnership Plumhall, and the blues group Hokum.
Councillor Ian Walker, serving as Bradford Council’s executive member for neighbourhoods and communities, offered commendation for the club’s cultural contributions.
The council representative described the anniversary as a significant achievement for the venue’s ongoing role in the city’s musical heritage.
Northern Monk will operate an outdoor bar facility during the festival.
Additional performances will take place in the market’s exterior areas prior to the official commencement of the main event.
