Keighley named Best Overall Town in Yorkshire for second year running at In Bloom awards

West Yorkshire has emerged victorious at the latest Yorkshire In Bloom Awards, with three districts securing significant recognition at the annual ceremony.

Keighley claimed the prestigious title of Best Overall Town in Yorkshire for the second consecutive occasion, further cementing its reputation for horticultural excellence and community engagement.

The Pennine town accumulated multiple accolades during the judging process.

A platinum award was presented for the Civic Centre and Town Hall Square area, while the community secured first place in the Large Town classification.

The historic Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, which operates services between Haworth and the terminal station at Oxenhope, was honoured with the Best Heritage Railway prize.

Neighbouring districts also performed creditably, with Shipley earning a silver gilt in the Town section and Rawdon securing gold in the Urban Community category.

Examiners were particularly impressed by the striking visual impact upon entering the town.

The proliferation of hanging baskets and railing planters throughout the Civic Centre precinct, combined with vibrant seasonal displays along main thoroughfares, created what judges described as a remarkable first impression.

The Town Hall Gardens were singled out for their exceptional colour palette and horticultural presentation.

Town Hall Square itself was characterised as a flourishing horticultural sanctuary that blends botanical expertise with local historical narratives and community identity to establish an inviting focal point within the commercial district.

The extensive floral arrangements positioned throughout the Civic Centre were noted for their robust health and vigour, which officials observed successfully enhanced the period architecture while linking the two principal civic spaces.

Recognition was extended to the numerous bodies and individuals whose contributions underpin the town’s success.

The volunteer workforce associated with the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, alongside representatives from Keighley Healthy Living, the Keighley Horticultural Society, and various grassroots initiatives, were specifically acknowledged for their dedication.

The collaborative approach demonstrated by these organisations, local enterprises, municipal personnel, and partner agencies was highlighted as a defining characteristic of the project.

The sustained achievement reflects the ongoing commitment of unpaid contributors who invest considerable time maintaining public planting schemes across all seasons.

Gardeners Steve Thorpe and his son Joe were among those who expressed satisfaction with the recognition, noting that despite unfavourable weather conditions during the summer months, the floral installations thrived through collective effort.

Community figures emphasised that the external validation serves as acknowledgment of the pride residents hold for their urban environment.

Municipal representative Andrea Walker indicated that the sustained success demonstrates what becomes possible when residents and organisations collaborate towards shared objectives.

The town mayor indicated that the recognition belongs to the entire community, from those who plant and tend displays to the businesses and council departments that provide support.

Keighley’s continued performance at regional competitions was attributed to the passion and coordinated endeavour visible throughout the district.
