Drivers warned to check insurance before new car test drives or collections

Vehicle owners are being urged to verify their insurance arrangements prior to operating any newly acquired car, as the automotive sector anticipates one of its busiest periods of the year.

The introduction of the new ’76’ licence plate in September traditionally triggers a surge in showroom activity across Britain, with numerous franchised and independent outlets reporting heightened interest in test drives and vehicle handover appointments.

Industry data compiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders indicates that approximately 75,000 new cars are projected to depart from UK dealerships throughout the current week.

Industry observers suggest that cumulative registrations for the month could surpass the 300,000 mark by late September.

Nevertheless, coverage experts have highlighted a widespread misconception among prospective purchasers regarding the extent of their protection during evaluation drives and collection procedures.

According to Tom Warsop, a motor insurance specialist at Covertime.com, the influx of new registration markers creates intense focus on vehicle selection and transaction terms, which can lead buyers to overlook an equally critical element of the purchase process.

Mr Warsop described the assumption of automatic coverage as a significant and concerning gap in driver understanding.

He emphasised that individuals should establish precisely what protection applies before commencing any journey in an unfamiliar vehicle.

While the majority of dealerships maintain motor trade insurance policies enabling potential buyers to evaluate cars, the scope of such arrangements frequently differs between retailers.

Coverage may be limited to third-party liability only, meaning damage sustained to the specific vehicle being assessed could fall entirely on the driver.

Additional limitations relating to driver age, licence conditions, or financial excess obligations might also be incorporated into dealership-provided policies.

Mr Warsop noted that the excitement surrounding vehicle collection frequently coincides with unexamined assumptions about insurance status.

Though certain showrooms may request confirmation of coverage from buyers, no legal obligation compels them to verify that valid protection exists before releasing a vehicle.

The accountability for confirming appropriate insurance ultimately rests with the operator.

For individuals requiring cover for a limited duration, short-term policies represent a viable alternative worth considering.

Covertime has recommended that those acquiring vehicles during September should undertake several precautionary steps.

Prospective buyers are advised to establish the precise nature of any insurance provided by the dealership before arranging a test drive, carefully review any conditions attached to showroom-based coverage, and confirm that an active policy sufficient for the intended journey is in force prior to taking a newly purchased car onto public roads.

Operating a motor vehicle without valid insurance constitutes a criminal offence carrying standardised penalties.

Offenders typically face a fixed penalty of 300 pounds together with six penalty points added to their driving record.

More significant breaches may result in unlimited financial penalties, disqualification from driving, or confiscation of the vehicle involved.
